Gary Salmirs serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Ironwill Foundation, a nonprofit that aims to fight obesity and raise money to battle diseases that receive minimal research funding.
Gary Salmirs once was unhealthy. He was 40 pounds overweight and his cholesterol soared. When Salmirs ended up in the hospital with a blood clot in an important vein to his liver, he realized he had to improve his health if he wanted to be around for his family.
Right after he left the hospital, Gary Salmirs saw a nutritionist. He started running and eventually became a triathlete. Since his hospitalization, Salmirs has seen his cholesterol level and weight dip and his blood clot disappear. He now participates in Ironman competitions and marathons throughout the country, competing in the ING New York City Marathon, Ironman Lake Placid, and Ford Ironman Arizona.
Realizing that multiple people had helped him fulfill his objective to become healthy, Gary Salmirs wanted to help others. In March 2008, he started the Ironwill Foundation. In addition to its mission to raise money for under-funded disorders, Salmirs’ organization teaches low-income families good nutritional habits through the Ironwill Wellness Program. The six-week course led by health experts teaches exercise to participants and gives them recipes for healthy meals. Salmirs’ Ironwill Foundation also raised tens of thousands of dollars for Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation, which funds research of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
Gary Salmirs graduated from the State University of New York at Oswego with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Salmirs lives in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with his wife, Maureen, and their three children.
